Het project Colonial Banality van Masha Krasnova-Shabaeva reflecteert met illustraties en aantekeningen op de politieke en psychologische complexiteiten van de retoriek rondom nationale identiteit. Masha is opgegroeid in Basjkortostan, een regio die in de 16e eeuw door de Russen werd bezet. Haar vader was Russisch, haar moeder is Tataars-Bashkir. Bashkirs en Tataren zijn beide Turkse minderheden met hun eigen taal en cultuur.
De performances van Natalia Papaeva zijn gebaseerd op haar herinneringen en andere biografische verhalen die gevormd zijn door haar Boerjat-Mongoolse achtergrond. Zingen en verhalen vertellen worden gebruikt als lyrisch medium om thema's als verlies, rouw, land en genezing te onderzoeken.

Masha was raised in Bashkiria, a region that became occupied by the Russian empire in the 16th century. Her father was Russian and her mother's background is Tatar-Bashkir; both Baskirs and Tatars are Turkic minorities with their own language and culture.
Natalia Papaeva’s performances often draw on her memories and other biographical stories, shaped by her Buryat-Mongolian background. Singing and storytelling are used as a lyrical medium to explore themes including loss, mourning, land, and healing.
