‘Paint.Things’ – Laurien Dumbar.
Laurien Dumbar is een abstracte schilder die met fotografie werkt. Met een camera onderzoekt zij de materialen van een schilder in relatie tot het aloude thema van de illusie van ruimte. Dumbar is gefascineerd door de vraag hoe een schilderkunstig beeld kan verschijnen in een ‘echte’ ruimte in plaats van op het canvas. In haar atelier maakt ze met alledaagse materialen als plasticfolie, papier en verf, ruimtelijke of plastische situaties die zij vastlegt met een I-Phone. In Nieuw Charlois toont zij een serie grote digitale prints die ze van deze foto’s heeft laten maken. Ze zijn mat en intens van kleur, de huid is echt en voelbaar, maar tegelijkertijd is het een afbeelding. Dumbar vraagt zich af wat abstracte schilderkunst kan zijn in de realiteit waarin we leven, met schermen tussen ons en de werkelijkheid, en waarin een digitale mindset onze blik heeft veranderd.
Laurien Dumbar is an abstract painter working with photography. Using a camera, she explores a painter's materials in relation to the time-honored theme of the illusion of space. Dumbar is fascinated by how a painterly image can appear in a "real" space rather than on canvas. In her studio, using everyday materials such as plastic wrap, paper and paint, she creates spatial or plastic situations that she captures with an I-Phone. In Nieuw Charlois, she is showing a series of large digital prints she has made from these photographs. They are matte and intense in color, the skin is real and tangible, but at the same time it is a picture. Dumbar wonders what abstract painting can be in the reality we live in, with screens between us and reality, and in which a digital mindset has changed our view.
