‘Works That Scare My Dog’ – Domas van Wijk.
De tentoonstelling raakt aan de fascinatie die Domas Van Wijk in al zijn werk zoekt: de schimmige en steeds vervagende scheidslijn tussen mens en machine, echt en fake, authenticiteit en counterfeit, leven en dood. Zijn installaties bestaan uit bestaande objecten, machines en situaties die een nieuwe bestemming en betekenis krijgen door de combinaties die Van Wijk ertussen maakt. Zoals kenmerkend is voor hedendaagse technologie, blijft de mechaniek die de verschillende elementen aandrijft onbegrijpelijk. Toch maken de geluiden die de verschillende "ontmoetingspunten" voortbrengen deze onzichtbare mechanismen en elektrische verbindingen voelbaar. Hoewel het auteurschap van de kunstenaar onuitgesproken aanwezig is in de relatie tussen de verschillende elementen van zijn installaties, lijken ze zichzelf in stand te houden, bezield met een eigen leven.
De nieuwe werken van Van Wijk en de combinatie ervan wijzen op de fundamentaliteit van de selectie, de presentatievormen en de contextuele framing. Van Wijk neemt bekende dingen - die deel uitmaken van onze dagelijkse stedelijke omgeving - om zeer suggestieve alternatieve lezingen van deze bekende dingen te creëren.
The exhibition touches on the fascination that Domas Van Wijk seeks in all his work: the shadowy and ever-blurring dividing line between man and machine, real and fake, authenticity and counterfeit, life and death. His installations are made of existing objects, machines, and situations that find new appropriation and meaning through the combinations Van Wijk creates between them. As is typical for contemporary technology, the mechanics driving the different elements remain incomprehensible. Yet, the sounds that are produced by the various “meeting points” make these invisible mechanisms and electric connections sensible. Although the authorship of the artist is inexplicitly present in the relationship between the different elements of his installations, they seem self-sustaining, animated with a life of their own.
Van Wijk’s new works and the combination between them point to the fundamentality of the selection, forms of display, and contextual framing. The use of familiar things – that are part of our day-to-day urban environment create highly suggestive alternative readings of these known things.
