In de zoektocht naar een eigen identiteit heeft de mens verschillende technologieën gebruikt. Van donker spiegelend water tot luxe spiegels op muren. Tegenwoordig is onze telefoon een object dat een “helder” beeld van onszelf weerspiegelt. De verborgen en snel ontwikkelende camera’s achter deze schermen tonen ons vervormde, aangepaste en verfraaide gezichten – de protagonisten van hedendaagse sprookjes. Met het gebruik van gezichts filters op een dagelijkse basis, zijn we bezig met het ritueel van maskeren, het uitdagen van binaire structuren en het ervaren van een ander zelf. Dit komt tot stand door uitbuiting van sociale media producties, ambitieuze start-ups en AI ontwikkelingen.
De tentoonstelling Screen, Screen on my Phone, Who’s the Fairest of Them All? is een vervolg op het onderzoek dat Doringer heeft gedaan naar het ritueel van maskeren (2007-2018), bekend onder de titel FACELESS.
Looking for oneself has been a journey throughout history. In this quest, humankind has used various technologies. From dark reflective water to luxury mirrors on walls. Today, an object that reflects a “clear” iamge of oneself is the screen of our phones. The hidden and fast-evolving cameras behind those screens now show us our distorted, adjusted and beautified faces – the protagonists of contemporary fairytales. With face filters on a daily basis, we are engaged in a ritual of masking in front of our phones, challenging binary structures and experiencing another self. All while feeding into exploitative social media production, ambitious startups and AI development.
The exhibition Screen, Screen on my Phone, Who’s the Fairest of Them All? is a follow-up on research that Doringer has conducted on the ritual of masking (2007-2018) known under the title FACELESS.
